The West African Examination Council is a prominent examination body that was established in 1952 to conduct examinations so as to ensure that students are certified for the next level of education and also awards certificates that meet the same standard with as the world class examination bodies.

How the West African Senior School Certificate Examination is Been Conducted
The main purpose of the WAEC is to oversee and affirm students’ academic performance before moving to the next level and also issue an academic report stating the student academic performance.
The publication to register for WAEC is been announced on all national newspaper and on the official website. The examination is being conducted yearly in two parts; which is the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and General Certificate Examination (GCE).
The Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) taken by senior secondary students in their final year, the exam is conducted during summer around the month of April and May and the result is out during the month of August or September.
The second part of examination is the General Certificate Examination (GCE) or WAEC GCE. It is a private examination taken by secondary school leavers who want to retake the WASSCE to correct any failed subjects, the examination is conducted during the month of September and October and the results is usually out by December.
ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENT FOR WASSCE
- The examination body only permits only students who are in their final year in their secondary level or students who failed any subject during the examination to write this examination.
- Candidates are expected to register for at least eight subjects which must include English, Mathematics, one local language, one vocational subject, and any other five related subjects depending on their field.
- Candidates who have three pass in an attempted GCE, failed a core subject in WASSCE, passed the Teachers’ Grade Two Examination are permitted to write GCE.
ENROLLMENT PROCESS
- Enrollment for the WASSCE for school students is always done online by the school authorities. The school registers their students for the examination by submitting the student basic information and biometric information.
- School authorities are expected to print the WAEC identity card for their student.
- Also for private candidates, the enrollment is usually done online by the individual including all biometrics registration by visiting the official website www.waeconline.org.ng
- The candidate buys a scratch card from an authorized vendor which enables the candidates to register fully for the examination on the official website.
- Private candidates are expected to print confirmation slip from website after registration. The confirmation slip confirms their registration and also contains important information of the candidates.
WAEC GRADING SYSTEM
After the examination are been conducted, the scripts are shared and marked among competent and reliable teachers. The council grades student score in percentage and represents it with letters (A – F).

NOTES:
- During the course of the examination students are advised not to be involved in any form of malpractice as this could lead to the cancellation of the result and also be prosecuted for cheating
- School students are expected to come with their WAEC Identity card to confirm their identity and also writing materials.
- Private candidate are also advised to come with their photo card as this will serve as a pass for entry into the examination hall and also writing materials.
